In extremely exciting news, we have just had it confirmed that former Yokozuna Akebono Taro will be attending our National Championships on July 18! Akebono was the first non-Japanese to be promoted to the rank of Grand Champion and was also one of the tallest and heaviest competitors in history, standing over two metres tall and weighing well over 200kg. Akebono will be our guest of honour at the tournament.
Also, another celebrity and great competitor has signed up to compete in our heavyweight division. Fans of the television show Gladiators will remember him as Thunder, but behind the glitz and glam is one of Australia’s foremost strongmen and strength athletes, Derek Boyer! Derek has been training with the Gold Coast club for a little while now, and has decided to test himself on the dohyo at the National Championships. At 145kg of pure muscle, Derek is sure to provide some interesting challenges for the other big guys!
