About the ASF

The Australian Sumo Federation, founded in 1992, has been active in international amateur sumo and a wide range of sporting and cultural activities ever since.  ASF athletes have participated in multiple World Sumo Championships along with the 2005 and 2009 World Games.  In August 2010, the ASF will also contribute athletes to the inaugural World Combat Games in Beijing, China.

Annually the ASF performs a demonstration of sumo at the Sakura Matsuri in the Japanese Garden in Cowra.  Demonstrations are also held in the Dubbo Japanese garden, at cultural and multicultural festivals, schools and any other event where we can make a positive contribution to the community.

Several major competitions are held each year. Nationally, the Southern Cross Sumo Open and Australian National Sumo Championships are our big events, whilst internationally, the Oceania Sumo Championships helps us determine our best possible team to send to major international events such as the World Championships and World Games. In 2010 at the Oceania Sumo Championships in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, our Australian team won the team championship for the first time ever as well as bringing home one gold, four silver and one bronze individual medals from our team of six!

There are active ASF clubs in Sydney and the Gold Coast, as well as ASF affiliated training groups in Perth, Canberra and country NSW.  New members are welcome to contact the ASF for help in finding a suitable training location.
