2013 Oceania Sumo Championships

This year it is our turn to host and the 2013 Oceania Sumo Championships will be held Sunday 3rd February at the Gold Coast. The venue is the Gold Coast Sumo Club’s home at the PCYC 180 Monaco St Broadbeach Waters, Gold Coast. Audience admission $5 adults $2 children. Competition entry $20 adults $5 children.

Competitions will be for men and women, juniors and also an under 12 event. The Oceania team trophy was won by New Zealand last year and will again be up for grabs.

Results of the senior competitions will be used for selecting the Oceania teams for the World Games in Cali, Colombia in July and the 2nd Combat and Martial Arts Games in St Petersburg, Russia in October. World Games http://worldgames2013.com.co/ Combat Games http://www.worldcombatgames.com/en/

Big Year for Sumo in 2013

There will be three big international events for sumo in 2013

The Oceania Sumo Championships at the Gold Coast 3rd February, The World Games in Cali Colombia 26th & 27th July and the 2nd World Combat Games in St Petersburg Russia 19th & 20th October.

Oceania Sumo Championships 3rd February, Sunday. Broadbeach PCYC Monaco St Broadbeach Gold Coast from 10 am. Competitions for men, women and juniors, also a team event.

The Oceania Championships event is being held earlier than usual in order to use the results for selecting the athletes who will represent Oceania at the World Games in July. We will select two men and two women in each of the categories, lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight. All competitors will take part in the Open on the second day of the event

The World Games 2013 is an outstanding event for non-olymic sports, with more than 30 sports taking part in the areas of Martial Arts – which includes Sumo – Ball Sports, Artistic & Dance Sports, Precision Sports, Strength Sports and Trend Sports – including Surfing and also Lifesaving. Later in the year the 2nd World Combat Games will allow us to send one man and one woman from Oceania for each of the categories. The second edition of SportAccord World Combat Games will feature the following 15 combat sports: Sumo, Aikido, Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, Kendo, Kickboxing, Muaythai, Sambo, Savate, Taekwondo, Wrestling and Wushu. http://www.worldcombatgames.com/en/

Sumo was very popular with spectators at the previous World Games and Combat Games, with tickets sold out at both events.

2012 Sumo World Championships Summary

The Australian team made a great effort at the 2012 Sumo World Championships, but the opposition was very tough and we were not able to score any medals this time. The team members are still to be congratulated on the work they put into their preparations and the dedication with which they faced the task of representing Australia in this major international tournament.

An impressive win was celebrated when Jason Mareko was able to defeat the reigning champion from Hungary in his first round match of the Men’s Heavyweight, but sadly Jason went down to his opponent in the next round.

All the Australians gained good experience from their matches and the desire to hone their skills for next year’s competition.

In the medal tally

Gold: 5 Russia, 5 Ukraine, 5 Japan, 4 Mongolia, 1 Hungary

Silver: 7 Russia, 4 Mongolia, 3 Ukraine, 2 Japan, 1 Bulgaria, 1 Hungary, 1 Georgia

Bronze: 11 Japan, 7 Ukraine, 4 Mongolia, 4 Poland, 4 Brazil, 2 Russia, 2 Hungary, 2 Netherlands, 2 Azerbaijan, 1 Bulgaria, 1 Thailand

Of the 30 countries participating in this championship, it is easy to see that currently the big 4 in amateur sumo are Russia, Ukraine, Japan and Mongolia

The Australian team is gearing up for the sumo world championships with entries in all of them.

3^rd Junior Women Sumo World Championships

11^th Junior Sumo World Championships

9^th Women sumo World Championships

18^th Sumo World Championships

Our athletes vary in age and experience and come from diverse sporting backgrounds.

Veteran, John Traill (Johnofuji), has competed in 5 Sumo World Championships and 2 World Games. He will take on the middleweights.

At the other end of the scale, 15 year old Brandon Venter is having his first international competition. With a black belt in Taekwando he holds several state and national titles in that sport and hopes to snag his first international medal in sumo.

Lightweight Dan Bazzana has a wide range of fighting experience in Judo, Brazilian Jujitsu and Savate as well as wrestling and sumo.

Our top weight, Jason Mareko 207kg, comes from American football and plans to push through to the finals of the heavyweight competition.

The women’s team is looking good too with Emily Knauth, from a judo and jujitsu background and Lauren Ivory a knife wielding chef with a mean bowling arm.
